Bio of Aditi Vijay, EdM, PhD

Dr. Vijay began her career in the South Bronx as a Teach For America Corps Member. As a middle school English teacher she had the chance to see adolescent development from a different perspective. This experience sparked her interest in the role of mental health in academic achievement and in scientific ways to support and promote mental health. Over time her interests have evolved to focus on intense emotions and the ways in which they impact people’s lives.

She completed her undergraduate degree in History and Psychology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. From there, Dr. Vijay went on to complete a Master of Arts in the Teaching of Social Studies at Columbia University and a Master’s in Education at Harvard University. Dr. Vijay received her Doctorate in Psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno. Her doctoral work was completed under the mentorship of Dr. Alan Fruzzetti. She completed a clinical internship at the VA Baltimore Health Care System/University of Maryland School of Medicine consortium where she was recognized as the Outstanding Intern in 2011.

Currently Dr. Vijay is an assistant professor at the Georgetown ...

I am passionate about effecting lasting change. My understanding, as a neuropsychologist, of both cognitive and affective neuroscience guides my treatment choices in terms of attaining these lasting outcomes. Furthermore, I strive to obtain results quickly, if at all possible (hence my perpetual interest in brief therapy models). While the value of traditional talk therapy is tremendous, I realized early on that it is not a panacea and that different approaches are needed for certain conditions such as trauma.

I have the greatest respect for my patients who have shown me over the years the resilience, creativity and ...

About CBT

The type of therapy I provide, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, focuses on teaching you skills that will help you effectively manage the problems you are having.  The time we spend together in session is focused on actively learning and practicing these skills.  This learning is reinforced outside of session, in your real life, through assignments that we decide on together.  As with any other skill, your early successes will encourage you to practice more.  The more you practice, the more natural it will feel and the more effective the CBT skills will be.  In fact, studies show that in many cases, not only do people who participate in CBT experience a decrease in symptoms after treatment, but symptoms can continue to decrease further up to a year after treatment.
